Partnerships, not projects.

The partnerships I return to year after year are the ones I’m most proud of. Here are a few of the organizations I’ve had the privilege of growing with.

Ongoing partnershipSince 2016

Traffic Jam! Swing

Nonprofit swing dance organization — Chicago, IL

Traffic Jam! promotes the education, history, and culture of swing dance in Chicago through regular dances, classes, and an annual weekend workshop. Over the past decade, it has grown into the largest swing dance organization in the city.

I co-founded the organization in 2016 and have been its designer throughout. The site has lived in three different platforms as the organization’s needs evolved—from a custom Craft CMS build to WordPress for e-commerce, and eventually to Squarespace, which now handles the site, ticket sales, class scheduling, and event calendar in one place. The ongoing work includes updating class schedules, designing event graphics and merchandise, creating social media assets, and periodically evolving the visual direction as the brand matures. When we launch a new dance series or event, that means building new sub-branding that holds together with the rest of the identity.

NADrPH

National Association for Doctors of Public Health

NADrPH is a membership organization serving Doctors of Public Health worldwide—supporting new practitioners and veterans alike through events, workshops, writing assistance, and partnerships with universities that give students access to professional resources as part of their programs.

When they came to me, they had just transitioned from a Coalition to a National Association and wanted their digital presence to reflect that shift. The existing site had been built by volunteers and no longer matched where the organization was headed. The redesign involved rebuilding their Squarespace site from the ground up and beginning the work of bringing their WildApricot member portal closer in line with the new brand.

The ongoing partnership has since grown to include new sections as the organization’s work expands—a policy and advocacy section for published white papers, an Ambassador Program section highlighting student and recent alum work, and new merchandise as needed. When something comes up, I already know the brand, the audience, and the goals.

Hand Papermaking Magazine

Nonprofit arts publication

Hand Papermaking is a nonprofit publisher dedicated to the art and craft of hand papermaking—a beautiful, meticulously produced magazine that includes actual paper samples and work from artists worldwide. The website, when they came to me, didn’t come close to reflecting that.

Their WordPress site had been getting hacked repeatedly, the team was afraid to try to update or change anything on the site, and the subscription management system was physical files stored in the director’s basement. We moved the site to Webflow to give it room to grow, rebuilt the entire content architecture so that the full history of the magazine is searchable—find an artist by name and surface every article featuring, written by, or about them, with direct links to purchase the relevant issue. We integrated a proper digital subscription management system and set up e-commerce for back issues and their annual limited-edition portfolio collections.

The goal throughout was to build something that matched the craft and care of the magazine itself—and gave the organization the infrastructure to keep growing without constantly patching a broken system.
